The 10th anniversary of the European Union’s expansion into Central and Eastern Europe might almost have been lost amidst the growing Euroskepticism among the European governments and electorate. This talk will examine the difficulties faced by new EU migrants, particularly the Polish community to Britain and the threats to minorities across Europe, and will argue that a lack of social cohesion may be the true threat to the long-term stability of the Union.

About the Lecturer: Professor Michael Johns is the Chair of Political Science and the Vice Dean of Arts, Laurentian University (Barrie campus). His work focuses on issues surrounding the rights of minorities and migrants in the European Union and he has recently published The New Minorities of Europe: Social Cohesion in the European Union (Lanham: Lexington Press, 2014). Professor Johns currently serves on the Executive of the Centre for Research on Canadian-Russian Relations and the international advisory board of the Minorities at Risk project.
