EVENT [CANCELLED]: Ukraine war and Energy Geopolitics: Iran Gas Potential to Promote Europe Energy Security

October 17, 2024 at 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Location:3112 Richcraft Hall

This event has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Event Description:

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EU has moved quickly to reduce its reliance on Russian gas and oil. Europe’s security strategy now prioritizes decreasing dependence on Russia, a goal highlighted by its broader security perspectives. This research explores key questions: What is Europe’s strategy for ensuring its energy security? How might Iran’s gas resources contribute to reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian energy, and what impact could this have on Iran-Europe relations?

The research findings indicate that, while the EU has taken steps such as signing agreements with other countries to secure alternative energy sources, these nations can only meet Europe’s gas needs in the short term. Iran’s vast gas reserves, however, offer a potential long-term solution that could significantly diminish Russia’s dominance in Europe’s energy supply. This suggests that European countries may need to reassess Iran’s role in strengthening Europe’s energy security.
