Gay in Russia poster

• What’s behind legislation and violence against Russia’s LGBT community?

• What should Canada do about it?

This panel will feature leading experts who will discuss Russia’s “anti-gay” bill passed by the Duma during summer 2013 which bans the distribution of information that is deemed to challenge traditional sexual relations or which “propagandizes” homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender people.

Dr. Andrea Chandler: Dr. Chandler teaches in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University and specializes in  social welfare in Russia as well as gender and politics in post-communist societies.

Dr. Jennifer Evans: Dr. Evans’ main research interests involve the history of sexuality in visual culture and the impact of social media and photography as agents of social meaning.

Dr. Erica Fraser: Dr. Fraser, who teaches in EURUS, is a historian specializing in gender and culture in the Soviet Union. She is currently working on a book manuscript on gender and Cold War culture entitled Armed Fantasy: Reinventing Soviet Masculinity after World War II.

Dr. Melissa Haussman: Dr. Haussman is an expert on women’s access to power and representation in North American political institutions. She included Carleton students who worked on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential nomination campaign and recently published Reproductive Rights and the State: Getting the Birth-Control, RU-486, Morning-After Pills and the Gardasil Vaccine to the US Market (Praeger, 2013).
