Roundtable Discussion: Russia After Elections

October 8, 2021 at 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Location:Online
Cost:Free

On Friday, October 8, 2021 from 10:30am-12:00pm the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies will be hosting a roundtable discussion with Andrea Chandler, Joan DeBardeleben, Paul Goode, and Margarita Zavadskaya on “Russia After Elections.”

Russians went to vote for the State Duma as well as regional elections on September 19, 2021. Following the jailing of prominent opposition figure Alexei Navalny, the classification of his organization as extremist, and the mass disqualification of opposition candidates across the country, the elections returned a slightly diminished majority for the pro-Putin United Russia party. Nevertheless, the results also revealed a robust protest vote in favor of the Communist Party, while the vote for United Russia has been called into question by forensic analyses of both regular and electronic voting. What does the handling of these elections tell us about the durability of the United Russia party? And what do the results portend for the future of Vladimir Putin’s rule, whose current term expires in 2024?
