The Caucasus Emirate: Islamic Radicalisation and Violent Engagement in the North Caucasus

(An Ethnographic Assessment)

Jean-François Ratelle’s dissertation examines the micro-dynamics of political violence and radicalization in the North Caucasus with a particular focus on Dagestan. He spent six months in Kabardino-Balkaria, Chechnya, and Dagestan doing ethnographic fieldwork. He most recently published, with Sufian Zhemukov, a policy memo for the Program on New Approaches to Research and Society in Eurasia (PONARS) entitled “A Case Study of Kabardino-Balkaria Insurgency: A Comparative Analysis of of Ideological Trends in the North Caucasus.”
