Jean-François Ratelle completed his PhD in 2013 at the University of Ottawa and is a postdoctoral fellow at George Washington University. His main research interests include the micro-dynamics of violence and terrorism, focusing on the North Caucasus. His PhD dissertation deals with the region’s recent upsurge of insurgent violence. Dr. Ratelle conducted interviews with insurgents, religious elites, members of security services, and local elites in 2010 and 2011 and engaged in ethnographic-based research in the region that focuses on the pathways toward insurgent participation.
