“Naturalists’ Views of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42)”



Dr.&nbsp;Antoinette Burton,&nbsp;is Professor of History and the Catherine C. and Bruce A. Bastian Professor of Global and Transnational Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.



She is the author and editor of several books on the social and cultural history of the British Empire, including&nbsp;Empire in Question: Reading, Writing, and Teaching British Imperialism,&nbsp;The Postcolonial Careers of Santha Rama Rau,&nbsp;Dwelling in the Archive:&nbsp;Women Writing House, Home, and History in Late Colonial India&nbsp;and&nbsp;After the Imperial Turn: Thinking with and through the Nation.&nbsp;Her work on the ‘New Imperial History’ has been described as “a very readable and thought-provoking reflection on identity, nation, and modernity that deserves a wide audience” (The Historian).



At the Underhill Colloquium, Dr. Burton will be speaking about her new work on the Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842).
