<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From<\/span> the <\/span>beginning <\/span>of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, <\/span>observers focused their attention on elite and popular responses and their implications for <\/span>the war and for domestic politics in Russia<\/span>. <\/span>Russia<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> state-controlled <\/span>media presents <\/span>an<\/span> image of a people unified behind Vladimir Putin, backed by an elaborate propaganda campaign that blends the war with<\/span> a combination of<\/span> humanitarian claims<\/span>,<\/span> historical imagery<\/span>, and Western conspiracies<\/span>. <\/span>While r<\/span>ecently released surveys suggest <\/span>a majority of<\/span> Russians support the war, social scientists <\/span>question <\/span>the results <\/span>given <\/span>evidence of manipulation or dissimulation<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

S<\/span>ocial media platforms provide occasional signs of elite discontent <\/span>and <\/span>suggest a weak <\/span>uptake of pro-war symbols. <\/span>While a spate of repressive laws criminalized dissent and impose harsh penalties for those who oppose the war, the need for such laws possibly indicates that the Kremlin <\/span>views public support as precarious. <\/span><\/span>T<\/span>his event <\/span>brings together <\/span>international experts on Russian politics and society <\/span>to <\/span>discuss what we know<\/span>\u2014and what we don\u2019t know\u2014about <\/span>elite and popular support<\/span> for the war in Russia. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
