Moving beyond Putin\u2019s rise or Yeltsin\u2019s weak authoritarianism, he explores the political ideals and dilemmas of the intellectual leaders of the perestroika-era democratic movement, showing how their focus on opposing the communist system while avoiding confrontation with the authorities helped concentrate power in the executive and undermine Russia\u2019s nascent democratic institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Speaker:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-justify para-style-body\"><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Guillaume Sauv\u00e9 teaches Russian and Eurasian politics at Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al and Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. His research bridges intellectual history and comparative politics.
