He is cross-appointed to the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS). He served as Chair of the Department of Political Science from 2021 to 2024 and as Director of EURUS from 2014 to 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Achim\u2019s scholarly work examines political contestation about regional and global governance, especially in the European Union (EU), which he has studied with a focus on communication in parliaments, the media, and among citizens. He has also published on multilevel governance, the politics of trade, and Canada-Europe relations. Achim is principal investigator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tradepol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Network on Trade Politics in North America and Europe<\/a>, funded through a Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (2026-33). He has also been awarded several grants from the EU\u2019s Erasmus+ Programme, most recently for the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tradenetwork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean Monnet Network on Transatlantic Trade Politics<\/a> (2020-24) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ces\/ces-projects\/jean-monnet-centre-excellence-carleton-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Carleton University<\/a> (2023-26). His research articles have appeared in some of the leading academic journals in the field, including European Journal of Political Research, West European Politics, Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of European Integration, Canadian Journal of Political Science, and Geopolitics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Achim enjoys teaching at all academic levels. He regularly offers PSCI 1100 (Democracy in Theory and Practice), PSCI 3207 (Politics of the European Union), PSCI 5103\/EURR 5108 (Canada-EU Relations), and PSCI 6105 (Comparative Politics I). With Amy Verdun and Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly, he has co-edited <a href=\"https:\/\/utppublishing.com\/doi\/book\/10.3138\/9781487542863\">European Union Governance and Policy Making: A Canadian Perspective (University of Toronto Press, second edition 2023),<\/a> a textbook on EU politics focused explicitly on a Canadian readership.
