The summary below is intended for general information purposes only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two concentrations in the MA degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Russian and Eurasian Studies<\/strong> concentration involves an interdisciplinary focus on the history, communist legacy and challenges facing countries in transition, with a geographic scope covering eastern and southeastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus and post-Soviet Central Asia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>European and European Union Studies<\/strong> concentration focuses on countries involved in the European Union and on the dynamics of European integration processes from an interdisciplinary perspective, including EU enlargement and relations of the EU with other states.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The EURUS degree includes the following  components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1.0 credit in Core courses, EURR 5001 and 5010 which are designed to enable students to develop a cumulative base of interdisciplinary knowledge, and to develop research proposals systematically with the support of their instructors and peers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.0 credit courses in their respective concentration (Russian and Eurasian; European and European Union). Coursework pathway students take 2.0 credits in their concentration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.0 credit in research essay EURR 5908 or 2.0 credit in thesis EURR 5909, which gives the student the opportunity to work with a faculty supervisor to develop a sustained research project,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remaining credits in EURUS electives (2.0 credits for coursework or research essay pathway; 1.0 credit for thesis pathway). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A language requirement, equivalent to the 2000 level (second-year) courses at Carleton, to ensure that the student is able to work with original-language sources. While prior language study is recommended, students with no prior language experience should expect to take language courses in addition to the above requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, students who choose the co-op option need to work two work terms (paid employment) to receive the co-op designation on their transcript. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, determined at the time of admission.
