(Schwartz, 2012)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Experiential learning is more than &#8220;learning by doing&#8221;; it should be <strong>meaningful<\/strong> and <strong>transformative<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Students need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to <strong>generate meaning<\/strong> on course concepts<strong>;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>opportunities for <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/reflection-and-assessment\/\"><strong>structured reflection<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>multiple ways of interacting<\/strong> with new information;<\/li>\n<li>to be <strong>actively engaged<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; e.g., doing, designing, creating, reflecting, analyzing, evaluating, generating and suggesting solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The activities need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to be <strong>aligned with the learning outcomes <\/strong>of your course\/program;<\/li>\n<li>to use <strong>relatable<\/strong> and <strong>relevant <\/strong>materials<strong>;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>to be <strong>meaningfully assessed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"\">\n\t<p>\n\t\t<a class=\"button__red button__red--outline\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/el-at-carleton\/#sect5\" target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about 12 types of EL activities<\/a>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"\">\n\t<p>\n\t\t<a class=\"button__red button__red--outline\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/experiential-learning-theory-and-scholarship\/\" target=&quot;_blank&quot; rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about EL theory and scholarship<\/a>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Getting Started<\/h2>\n<p>Before you jump into planning your experiential learning activity, consider how it will fit into the bigger picture of your course.<\/p>\n<p><em>Constructive alignment <\/em>(Fig. 1) is when the four elements of course design are working in harmony:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Context<\/strong>. What&#8217;s the context of your course (class size\/level, TAs, etc.)?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning outcomes<\/strong>. What do you want your students to know, be able to do, and value by the end of the activity?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment and feedback<\/strong>. How will you assess the activity to provide you with evidence of (and feedback on) students&#8217; learning?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teaching and learning activities<\/strong>. Constructive alignment in course design (from Biggs, 1996)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Context<\/h3>\n<p>The context of your course will determine what kinds of experiential learning activities you can run. Consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Students<\/strong> (level of study, age, motivation, past knowledge\/experiences, life situation, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classroom\/scheduling<\/strong> (class size, course schedule, physical\/virtual environment, delivery mode, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resources<\/strong> (TAs, equipment, lab space, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Program<\/strong> (core\/elective course, mandated assessments (e.g., % final exam), contact time requirements, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, smaller class sizes and more advanced learners may be more conducive experiential learning activities that require significant coordination or involve external stakeholders, like in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/in-the-community\/\">community-based activities<\/a>. Some activities like <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/activity-and-course-design\/case-study\/\">case studies<\/a> and some types of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/field-experiences\/\">field experiences<\/a> can also suit large class sizes.<\/p>\n<p>If your course context makes it difficult for you to provide experiential learning opportunities, consider instead pointing your students to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/experientialeducation\/co-curricular\/\">co-curricular activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Learning outcomes<\/h3>\n<p>Learning outcomes are statements that describe the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students are expected to develop in your course.
