There are three types of workplace-based experiential learning activities at Carleton: placements, internships, and co-op. Continue reading to learn more about each type.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Placements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Placements provide students the opportunity to <strong>apply theories and concepts to a practice-related environment<\/strong>. Usually, placements are linked to professional programs, such as teacher education, social work, nursing, anthropology, or law.<\/p>\n<p>Placements are usually <strong>unpaid<\/strong>, but students receive <strong>academic credit<\/strong> toward their degree. Community partners may be involved in the evaluation of students&#8217; performance in their placements.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about arranging <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/financialservices\/risk-management\/student-unpaid-placements\/students-registered-course-unpaid-work-placement-requirement\/\">unpaid placements<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Internships\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Internships are <strong>paid work assignments<\/strong> that are a <strong>required part of academic programs<\/strong> that allow students to apply and expand their knowledge and skills in a work-related, professional environment.<\/p>\n<p>Internships can be <strong>part-time or full-time<\/strong>. Students&#8217; work is evaluated based on predetermined <strong>learning goals set by all stakeholders involved<\/strong>: employer, instructor\/supervisor, and student. Students may submit a final work report and a transcript notification of <strong>pass\/fail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about Carleton&#8217;s funded internship for undergraduate student research, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/discoverycentre\/funding-opportunities\/icureus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I-CUREUS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Co-op<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Co-operative education, or &#8220;co-op&#8221;,\u00a0 programs are organized in <strong>paid work opportunities of 4, 8, 12, and sometimes 16 month durations. <\/strong>Students who complete all requirements of the Co-Operative Education program can earn the Co-op designation on their degree.<\/p>\n<p>Co-op students can <strong>alternate between full time academic terms and full time work terms<\/strong>.
