Each individual Fund Code represents the source and intended purpose of funds and how they should be spent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3297\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/wp-content\/uploads\/FundCode-240x70.gif\" alt=\"FundCode\" width=\"415\" height=\"121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/wp-content\/uploads\/FundCode-240x70.gif 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/wp-content\/uploads\/FundCode-160x46.gif 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why is it important?<\/h3>\n<p>The Fund Code tells us which bucket of money the transaction belongs to based on the accounting structure and in some cases defines ownership of the transaction.<\/p>\n<p>Carleton has over 6000 individual Funds that are grouped into common categories:<b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operating (100000)\n<ul>\n<li>houses the activity associated with our main function of instructional teaching<\/li>\n<li>consists of just 1<b>\u00a0<\/b>Fund for all departments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ancillaries (12xxxx)\n<ul>\n<li>includes activity for operations that are supportive of, but not directly related to, the University\u2019s primary function of instruction and research<\/li>\n<li>examples include Athletics, Housing, Health Services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Endowments (6xxxxx)\n<ul>\n<li>donated funds that must be held in perpetuity<\/li>\n<li>only the annual income earned is available for spending<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Scholarships (2xxxxx)\n<ul>\n<li>donated or endowment generated funds that are restricted for student aid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Plant &amp; Capital Projects (9xxxxx)\n<ul>\n<li>funds expended on fixed assets (e.g. equipment, buildings) and major renovations\/repairs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Special Purpose (26xxxx)\n<ul>\n<li>donated or University designated funds for specific endeavors, other than those noted above (e.g. lecture series, faculty Chairs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Where do I find more information?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/2015\/putting-the-f-in-foapal\/\">Read the &#8216;Tips from a Financial Services Insider&#8217; post about Fund Codes.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Further information on funds contact the <a href=\"&#x6d;&#97;i&#x6c;&#x74;&#111;:&#x63;&#111;n&#x74;&#x72;&#111;l&#x6c;&#101;r&#x73;&#x6f;&#102;f&#x69;&#x63;&#101;&#x40;&#x63;&#97;r&#x6c;&#x65;&#116;o&#x6e;&#46;c&#x61;\">Controller&#8217;s Office<\/a> (not research-related) or <a href=\"&#x6d;&#x61;&#x69;&#x6c;&#x74;&#x6f;&#x3a;&#82;&#101;&#115;&#101;&#97;rchF&#x69;&#x6e;&#x61;&#x6e;&#x63;&#x65;&#x40;&#x63;&#97;&#114;&#108;&#101;&#116;on&#46;c&#x61;\">Research Financial Services<\/a> (research-related).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is it?
