{"id":988,"date":"2013-10-04T16:05:57","date_gmt":"2013-10-04T20:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/?page_id=988"},"modified":"2025-04-17T13:04:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T17:04:08","slug":"principal-investigator-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/glossary\/p\/principal-investigator-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Principal Investigator"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What is it?<\/h3>\n<p>The Principal Investigator (PI) is the lead researcher on a University research project and the associated <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/glossary\/f\/fund\/\">Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is it important?<\/h3>\n<p>The PI is the primary <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/glossary\/f\/financial-approval\/\">financial approval authority<\/a>\u00a0on a research Fund, and is normally a faculty member or an adjunct research professor. As such, s\/he is responsible for the research elements of the project as well as monitoring the financial health of project and reviewing\/ approving all transactions. The PI may delegate financial approval\u00a0authority to another individual provided that s\/he signs a <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/facts\/glossary\/d\/delegation-authority\/\">Delegation of Authority<\/a> form (click here for the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/financialservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/Delegation-of-Authority.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">form)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate students may not be a PI on a Fund.
