DESCRIPTION:Passion Relics in Late Medieval Pilgrim Tales: The Agency of Devotional Objects in Contexts of Cultural Dispossession



Each year, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences awards the Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship to one of its outstanding faculty members, in order to facilitate the completion of a major research project that requires significant release time. Once the year has completed, the Fellowship winner delivers a lecture on the research they were able to accomplish during their time as the Marston LaFrance Fellow.




Dr. Siobhain Bly Calkin is an Associate Professor of English and Coordinator of the Minor in Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. She is the author of Saracens and the Making of English Identity: The Auchinleck Manuscript, the lead author of the open access digital resource Relic Tales, and the co-editor with Matthew Aiello of a 2025 special issue of Exemplaria entitled “Retracing Trauma’s Theories in Premodern Literatures.” She has been the recipient of two multi-year research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and has published numerous articles on medieval romances, crusading texts, trauma, and manuscripts. She is currently the Past President of the Canadian Society of Medievalists/ Société canadienne des médiévistes. In 2025-26, she was awarded the Marston LaFrance Fellowship to complete her book, Narratives of Impassioned Things: Writing Passion Relic Agency in Holy Land Tales of Crusade and Pilgrimage.
