<\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/people\/ellen-waterman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ellen Waterman<\/a> is a Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ssac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School for Studies in Art and Culture<\/a>. <br><br>Waterman is a music and sound studies scholar and flutist whose socially engaged research involves collaboration with other scholars, artists and community groups.<br><br>She helped build the field of critical improvisation studies through the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and was a founding co-editor of <em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">Critical<br>Studies in Improvisation\/Etudes critiques en improvisation<\/em>.<br><br>At Carleton, Waterman is the director of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mssc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music, Sound and Society in Canada (MSSC)<\/a>, an interdisciplinary research centre exploring the complex ways that music and sound are shaped by, and help to shape, our society.<br><br>Launched in 2021 and committed to community-engaged scholarship and researchcreation for social transformation, the MSSC brings together a large and diverse cohort of research fellows, collaborators and community members.<br><br>This list includes Carleton Music Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/people\/stewart-jesse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jesse Stewart<\/a>, recently named a member of the Royal Society of Canada\u2019s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, and Film Studies Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/filmstudies\/people\/kester-dyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kester Dyer<\/a>, who produced an Indigenous Media Making Summer Institute with Wapikoni Mobile and the MSSC in 2023.<br><br>Through the MSSC, Waterman is the Principal Investigator on two major research projects: <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mssc\/research\/resonance-towards-a-community-engaged-model-of-research-creation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">The Resonance Project<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mssc\/research\/expanding-the-music-circle-through-networked-improvisation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">Expanding the Music Circle<\/em><\/a>.<br><br><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">The Resonance Project<\/em> explores the nature of interdisciplinary collaboration in the arts,<br>as professional and community musicians work together to co-create music in response<br>to two group exhibitions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cuag.ca\/\">Carleton University Art Gallery<\/a>.<br><br>Meanwhile, the <em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">Expanding the Music Circle<\/em> project seeks to develop a networked<br>musical improvisation pedagogy in collaboration with orchestra musicians, special<br>music educators and adults with
