  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>When Kate Lindsay\u2019s husband died suddenly in 2006, she was raising two teenage children and had two international exchange students under her roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overwhelmed and looking for ways to focus her mind, she stumbled on a newspaper ad for a bridging course at Carleton University offered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cie\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Initiatives in Education (CIE).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bridging Program, which introduced the university system, its supports, and academic skill-building, set the foundation for Kate to complete a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Psychology, all while working and supporting her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in class and working on course material, I was engaged with what I was learning rather than spending all my waking hours thinking about how my life had changed,\u201d says Kate.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI was also very motivated to do well because I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable, that I was \u2018university material,\u2019 and that I wasn&#8217;t too old to learn new things,\u201d she says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" 25th anniversary celebration (Photo by Ainslie Coghill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, at the CIE\u2019s 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary celebration, Kate and her child Court Lindsay were invited to speak to gathered guests of the Centre \u2013 alumni, past and present instructors, faculty, and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before pursuing a university education, Court struggled with high school and says those struggles resulted in a lack of confidence about their place in the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Court, following in their mother\u2019s footsteps through the CIE\u2019s programming felt like a natural pathway towards a university education, so in 2008 Court entered into the Centre\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enriched Support Program (ESP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLearning course material in a deeper way in my courses and workshops made me feel more engaged and connected and helped me build the skills I needed in order to succeed,\u201d says Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came to realize that there was a place for their experiences as a student, facilitator, and program advisor with the CIE. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, Court\u2019s academic journey came full circle when they began working as an ESP Workshop Facilitator, then an ESP Facilitator Team Leader, and finally, as an ESP Program Advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI learned more about the process of learning, which not only gave me the opportunity to support other students in the same way I had been supported, but also made me an even stronger student and more confident in myself and my abilities in and outside of the classroom,\u201d they say.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As avid learners, both Kate and Court have also taken part in the CIE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lifelong\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lifelong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lifelong Learning Program<\/a> (formerly Learning in Retirement).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remarkably, Kate says she\u2019s taken about 30 Lifelong Learning courses, and has a particular fondness for musicology courses with instructor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lifelong\/keith-mccuaig\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lifelong\/keith-mccuaig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keith McCuaig<\/a>. To attend the CIE anniversary event, she happened to be missing one of his lectures \u2013 an admission that had the crowd laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLearning really isn&#8217;t just for the young, and that drive that I feel to learn more continues to this day. It&#8217;s the reason I continue taking courses with the Lifelong Learning Program and I look forward to their future offerings,\u201d says Kate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1997, the CIE has offered a community of care and support at Carleton University, building learners\u2019 confidence and capacity through evidence-based, student-centred pedagogy and practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Director of the CIE, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/janet-mantler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Janet Mantler<\/a>, welcomed event attendees and spoke about the Centre\u2019s long-standing mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat really stands out to me about the CIE is everyone\u2019s commitment to the cause,\u201d she says. \u201cEach day, the people of CIE are changing the lives of others by providing supported access to learning.
