That is hard to find.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Vandale earned&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fgmtl.org\/en\/our-impact\/stories-that-inspire\/the-fondation-famille-kenny-tang-impact-bursary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Fondation Famille Kenny Tang\u2019s Impact Bursary<\/a>&nbsp;for her poignant and visually captivating documentary&nbsp;<em>Is That My Mama?,<\/em>&nbsp;which explores themes of trauma, healing, and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/02\/A7R03890-1-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"Verena Wilhelmson, a nuu\u010daanu\u0142 (Nuu-chah-nulth) filmmaker-participant from near Port Alberni, BC, and team member Mathieu Germain-Goodman (an Innu filmmaker from Mashteuiatsh) in the Dominion Arboretum during Day #3 of the workshop. During daily workshop sessions and seminars, they can hone their cinematography, sound recording and design, and editing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piloted by Carleton&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/filmstudies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Film Studies<\/a>&nbsp;professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/filmstudies\/people\/kester-dyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kester Dyer<\/a>, the institute accepts between six and nine participants annually. Beyond the daily sessions, this year included tours of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallery.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Gallery of Canada<\/a>&nbsp;and conversations with Indigenous faculty member&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/mccue-duncan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Duncan McCue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/media-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TLS Media Production<\/a>&nbsp;supplied the spaces and equipment where the workshops took&nbsp;place, and their staff, Hasi Eldib and Greg Allison, were the primary instructors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea for the institute arose when Dyer was involved in a partnership with Wapikoni as a PhD student at Concordia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was impressed with the kind of impact Wapikoni had achieved. While the traditional scholarly output that I had been working on was interesting and useful, I felt that parallel activities directly engaging in co-creation projects could lead to more tangible collective forms of knowledge for university professors, students, and staff, as well as collaborating artists and Wapikoni filmmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2025\/02\/IMG_3103-1-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"Dean Duncan, a Kitasoo Xaixais filmmaker-participant from Klemtu, BC, filming Verena Wilhelmson in the greenscreen studio in Media Commons. Local organizations like Ottawa\u2019s Digital Arts Resource Centre (<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalartsresourcecentre.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DARC<\/a>) and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historymuseum.ca\/learn\/research\/indigenous-internship-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Museum of History<\/a>\u2019s Indigenous Language Advisor, Ga\u00eblle Mollen, were among the featured guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabrielle Brochu, a second year student in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/music-and-culture-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Master\u2019s of Arts, Music and Culture program<\/a>&nbsp;at Carleton and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wnnb.wolastoqey.ca\/about-us\/our-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wolastoqey<\/a>&nbsp;artist, served as a student researcher at the institute.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cStories are a cornerstone of so many Indigenous cultures across Turtle Island, and so filmmaking offers Indigenous artists a medium through which to share their own stories with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous kin,\u201d says Brochu. \u201cThe importance of this cannot be understated, as it offers Indigenous artists a way to express their voices and to amplify them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Brochu participated in grant writing for the institute and interacted with the participants daily, guiding them around campus and getting updates on their projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants became familiar with campus life and took part in several exchanges, including visits to Carleton&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/cisce\/students\/ojigkwanong-indigenous-student-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ojigkwanong Centre<\/a>.
