students descended on a plain beige building near the St. Laurent Shopping Centre to mount an art exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a flutter of activity, labels were installed onto walls, opening remarks were rehearsed, and a cheese board assembled for patrons to enjoy during the <em>vernissage<\/em> for <em>Rebellion: The Power of Narrative <\/em>on April 1, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition itself, a visually striking assembly of 22 artworks by 18 different artists, was curated entirely by students enrolled in \u201cMobile Subjects: Migration and Diaspora in Contemporary Canadian Art,\u201d a uniquely hands-on art history course offered through Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ssac\/\">School for Studies in Art and Culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building in question, tucked between two sprawling car dealerships, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/artbank.ca\/\">Canada Council Art Bank<\/a>, the unassuming home of the world\u2019s largest collection of Canadian contemporary art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArt history is usually taught in classrooms, with students writing essays and attending lectures,\u201d explains art history professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/aah\/people\/tiampo-ming\/\">Ming Tiampo<\/a>, who designed the course and is a celebrated curator herself. \u201cThis class had the great privilege to <em>make <\/em>history, drawing from the extensive and extraordinary collection of the Art Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"reframing-how-we-think-about-canadian-art-and-identity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reframing How We Think About Canadian Art and Identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rebellion: The Power of Narrative<\/em>&nbsp;brings together the work of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) Canadian&nbsp;visual artists to explore how Indigenous, diasporic, racialized, and marginalized communities challenge dominant histories and reclaim their stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition is divided into five thematic sections: historiography, alienation, joy, land, and futurity. Some were acquired in the very early days of the Art Bank and others are more recent purchases, but they&#8217;re still linked across time through the shared issues that they raise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI think we have this preconceived notion that visual art is just about beautiful things. But visual art is so much more: it&#8217;s about current issues, identity, protest. It\u2019s also quite complicated curating an exhibition with 18 people, so they got an extreme crash course in collaboration and teamwork as well.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNow they&#8217;ll be going into the world with a toolbox of skills to help them become arts professionals in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The students shared that while the prospect of putting together a full-scale art exhibition felt daunting at the start of the semester, the course was structured in a way that allowed them to tackle the process one task at a time, until everything came together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there was a point where a lot of us were worried and wondering, \u2018Is this actually going to happen?\u2019 Shauna joked. \u201cAnd then we made it happen!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery
