Three of the four Carleton nominees are in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/liveculture\/ottawa-book-awards-finalists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English non-fiction<\/a> category and one nominee is in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ottawa.ca\/fr\/culturevive\/centres-des-arts\/prix-du-livre-d-ottawa-finalistes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">French non-fiction<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"four-carleton-english-ottawa-book-awards-nominees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four Carleton English Ottawa Book Awards Nominees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the English non-fiction nominees is <em>Fight to the Finish: Canadians in the Second World War, 1944-1945<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/tim-cook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Cook,<\/a> a historian at the Canadian War Museum and an adjunct research professor of History in Carleton\u2019s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The book is the second volume of a two-part series and tells the stories of Canadians both overseas and at home. Cook is a <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/liveculture\/ottawabookawards-pastwinners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">past winner<\/a> of the Ottawa Book Award for his non-fiction book <em>At the Sharp End: Canadians Fighting the Great War<\/em>, which won in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-21138 size-full\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"260\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Tim-Cooks-The-Necessary-War.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Cook's The Necessary War\" class=\"wp-image-21138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Tim-Cooks-The-Necessary-War.jpg 260w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Tim-Cooks-The-Necessary-War-200x265.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><figcaption>Tim Cook&#8217;s The Necessary War<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Another nominee from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in the English non-fiction division is <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/norman-hillmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norman Hillmer<\/a> for his book <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2015\/historys-norman-hillmer-releases-definitive-biography-on-formative-public-servant-o-d-skelton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>O.D. Skelton: A Portrait of Canadian Ambition<\/em><\/a>. Hillmer is a Chancellor\u2019s Professor in History and International Affairs. Skelton: A Portrait of Canadian Ambition by Norman Hillmer<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/english\/2016\/instructor-mark-frutkin-named-as-one-of-the-2016-ottawa-book-award-finalists\/\">Also nominated was English Department instructor Mark Frutkin<\/a>&nbsp;for his latest collection of poems, <a href=\"http:\/\/quattrobooks.ca\/books\/hermit-thrush\/\"><em>Hermit Thrush.<\/em><br>\n<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/quattrobooks.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Hermit-Thrush_front-cover-220x348.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Frutkin's Hermit Thrush\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The final English non-fiction nominee is <a href=\"https:\/\/borntowalk.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dan Rubinstein<\/a>, senior writer with the Department of University Communications, with his book <em>Born to Walk: The Transformative Power of a Pedestrian Act. <\/em>The book is dedicated to the simple act of walking and how, shown through Rubinstein\u2019s research and reporting, this fundamental movement is connected to our overall well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"french-non-fiction-ottawa-book-awards-nominee\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">French Non-fiction Ottawa Book Awards Nominee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the French non-fiction division, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/french\/people\/patricia-smart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patricia Smart<\/a>, Chancellor\u2019s Professor Emerita of the French Department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, received a nomination for her work <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2015\/from-the-nun-to-the-call-girl-patricia-smarts-award-winning-book-on-quebec-womens-personal-writings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>De Marie de l\u2019Incarnation \u00e0 Nelly Arcan<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>The book details a collection of writings by women providing their perspectives and experiences throughout Quebec\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-19466 size-full\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"386\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Patricia-Smart-Book.jpg\" alt=\"Patricia Smart's De Marie de l\u2019Incarnation \u00e0 Nelly Arcan\" class=\"wp-image-19466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Patricia-Smart-Book.jpg 386w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Patricia-Smart-Book-200x301.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><figcaption>Patricia Smart&#8217;s<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning publications will be revealed on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Ottawa City Hall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Ottawa has announced its nominees for the&nbsp;2016 Ottawa Book Awards, and five members of the Carleton community are among the finalists (four of which are in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences).
