Laqueur <\/a>will be speaking at Carleton University as a&nbsp;guest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of History<\/a>. Laqueur<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, in Toronto, Professor Laqueur won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cundillprize.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2016 Cundill Prize<\/a> in Historical Literature for his new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/titles\/10535.html\">The Work of The Dead<\/a>. The book offers a richly detailed account of how and why the living have cared for the dead, from antiquity to the twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subject of Laqueur\u2019s book is also the theme of his&nbsp;Shannon Lecture. The lecture, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/news\/shannon-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Cultural History of Caring for the&nbsp;Dead Body<\/a>, will be given in Lecture Room 282 of&nbsp;the University Centre from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm. Everyone is welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"about-the-shannon-lecture-series\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">About The Shannon Lecture Series<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of the History Department\u2019s Shannon Lecture Series for 2016 is Critical Care: Treatment of Body and Mind in Social and Cultural History, and it examines the social, intellectual and cultural history of health, sickness, disease and medicine. The series is organized by medical historian <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/susanne-m-klausen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susanne M. Klausen<\/a> and doctoral candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/christine-chisholm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christine Chisholm<\/a>&nbsp;of the Department of History.&nbsp;Laqueur&#8217;s presentation&nbsp;is the fourth and final lecture in the monthly series which began in September. He has written a number of award winning books, and his most recent, The Work of the Dead, won the $75,000 (U.S.)&nbsp;Cundill Prize (administered by McGill University\u2019s History Department) on November 17. As well, the book won the 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/proseawards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PROSE Award<\/a> in European &amp; World History (Association of American Publishers), as well as the 2016 Gold Medal Winner in World History (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independentpublisher.com\/ipland\/ipawards.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Independent Publisher Book Awards<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><br>\nThomas W.
