Wright<\/a> has been named&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/music.utoronto.ca\/our-visitors.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Composition (2019-20)<\/a> at the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wright, whose research focuses on film music, post-tonal music theory and analysis, and twentieth century music, is also well known as a prolific composer of vocal and choral works, many of which involve the integration of music with visual art and dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Wright authored the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mqup.ca\/they-shot--he-scored-products-9780773557154.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>They Shot, He Scored: The Life and Music of Eldon Rathburn<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(Montreal: McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press, 2019)<\/a>, which examines the life and work of the Canadian composer Eldon Rathburn. Known to his peers as \u201cThe Dean of Canadian film composers,\u201d Rathburn wrote over 275 film scores throughout his 40-year career working for the National Film Board of Canada, and scored many of the early IMAX films.&nbsp; It was Applebaum who, in his role as Director of Music at the NFB, first hired Rathburn to work for the film board in 1947.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven Louis Applebaum\u2019s pre-eminence among Canadian composers of the twentieth century, the stature of previous Louis Applebaum honorees, and the important and historic role the University of Toronto has played in post-secondary music education in Canada, I am deeply humbled by this honour,\u201d said Wright upon learning of his appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wright will commence in his role as The Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Composition (2019-20) during the Winter term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-medium wp-image-27758\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2-400x574.jpg\" alt=\"Louis Applebaum\" class=\"wp-image-27758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2-400x574.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2-200x287.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2-768x1101.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2-1024x1468.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2-1071x1536.jpg 1071w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Louis-Applebaum-2.jpg 1339w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>Louis Applebaum<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am keenly looking forward to engaging with composition students and faculty at the U. of T., and to giving <a href=\"https:\/\/music.utoronto.ca\/mob-concerts-events.php?eid=2687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the annual Louis Applebaum lecture<\/a> on my recent book examining NFB film music and the life and work of Eldon Rathburn,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous University of Toronto Louis Applebaum honoree was Canadian-born Hollywood film composer Howard Shore, who is celebrated for scoring such iconic films as <em>Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em> and <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wright<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>has also served as Vice-President of ONMC (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.onmc.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa New Music Creators<\/a>) and on the Board of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chamberfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival<\/a>.&nbsp; He teaches music theory,&nbsp;composition, music perception, and musicology&nbsp;in the School for Studies in Art and Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-louis-applebaum-distinguished-visitor-in-composition\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Composition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Composition was established by Sandra and Joseph Rotman to honour the memory of the Canadian film composer Louis Applebaum (1918-2000). The inaugural visitor was U of T alumnus and 2013 Oscar winner Mychael Danna. Subsequent visitors included Paul Chirara, Richard Bellis, Lawrence Shragge, Richard Bronskill, and Howard Shore.
