They did so through readings and through direct contact with the Women\u2019s Foundation of Nepal and local initiatives in Ottawa which support the Women\u2019s Foundation. While the group planned to mobilize the dynamic social action knowledge they acquired in SOCI 3220C during a Spring term four-week trip to Nepal in support of the Foundation, the global COVID-19 health pandemic rendered the travel impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although the group was disappointed to cancel their trip, they remained intent on employing their knowledge to make a tangible contribution in the struggle to end violence against women.&nbsp; With that, Conners and her group nimbly pivoted to focus on the creation of a qualitative research project. Together they assembled a poignant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Nepal-Guidebook-Final-May-5-2020-submit.pdf\">Guidebook<\/a>&nbsp;to showcase resources and personal reflections from students in her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/W20reviewed_202010_SOCI-3220C_Deborah-Conners.pdf\"><em>Working Toward a Violence-Free Society in Nepal<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;course.&nbsp; This Guidebook serves as a helpful guide for future students, and more specifically those who will take part in the course&nbsp;<em>International Community Engagement and Study Trip: Working Toward a Violence-Free Society in Nepal<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-guidebook\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Guidebook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guidebook includes an insightful literature review, detailed summaries of what students have learned about Nepal itself, useful descriptions of the actual logistics involved in travel, and an accessible introduction to the Nepalese language followed by personal reflections from each student from the SOCI 3220C 2020 class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the many challenges presented by the health pandemic, Dr. Conners will continue her impactful work in Nepal.&nbsp; Her next step will be to interview five Nepalese female leaders on their vision for gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Nepal-Guidebook-Final-May-5-2020-submit.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-05-at-3.03.51-PM-200x214.png\" alt=\"Nepal Guide Book\" class=\"wp-image-29413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-05-at-3.03.51-PM-200x214.png 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-05-at-3.03.51-PM-400x427.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-05-at-3.03.51-PM-768x821.png 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-05-at-3.03.51-PM-1024x1094.png 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-05-at-3.03.51-PM.png 1404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the summer, Professor Conner&#8217;s continuing students from her class <em><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/socanth\/wp-content\/uploads\/202020_SOCI-3210A_Deborah-Conners-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Working Toward Women\u2019s Equality in Nepal: A qualitative research project<\/a>, <\/em>produced a report that&nbsp;resulted in some important insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third-year student Kiana Lawrence explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Working Toward Women\u2019s Equality in Nepal: A qualitative research project <\/em>taught&nbsp;by Professor Deborah Conner\u2019s at Carleton University in Spring 2020, created a project that allowed us, as Westerners, to understand gender injustice in Nepal and find ways in which Westerners can be a part of the solution Our main research question was \u201cWhat would be a made-in-Nepal approach to women\u2019s equality?\u201d.
