The course, by nature, includes a public performance of music that each student has studied throughout the year. Their performance is meant to meet an early professional performance standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cowal performed alongside talented musicians Mike Tremblay, Mark Ferguson, John Geggie, Jamie Holmes, Ed Lister, Dan Marano, and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/story\/the-raven-saxophone-quartet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Raven Saxophone Quartet<\/a>. Crucially, she was also supported by John Rosefield, Mike Giamberardino, Colin Elliott and the team at Carleton University Event Support \u2013 Instructional Media Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-1024x573.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-1024x573.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-200x112.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-1536x860.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Quartet-plus-Ed-2048x1147.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the inherent nuances and complexities of holding a live, virtual music event, Supervisor of Performance Studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/people\/james-mcgowan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James McGowan<\/a>, was thrilled with the outcome of the recital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those behind the Graduating Recital course had to move quickly, as the stay-at-home order came only days before the Music program planned to host safe and distanced, in-person recitals on stage at Kailash Mital Theatre and the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/cdcc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite many challenges \u2013 most unseen by the audience \u2013 in producing this unprecedented show, Rebecca, the other musicians, and the tech team kept their cool. Everyone\u2019s professionalism exceeded expectations despite many stressful moments!\u201d says McGowan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many hours were spent designing visual layouts, organizing a detailed timeline for the show, preparing pre-recorded content, working through the tech demands, delivering the proper equipment to those who needed it, and dress-rehearsing the music.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat has come out of this, though: Rebecca, with her commitment and resilience, has completed a remarkable performance achievement,\u201d says McGowan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe is now extremely well situated to be a professional musician in the digital world, and thanks to the new skills acquired by people in the Music Program through this process, we are now fully ready to embark on future innovative programming and plan to put all of this experience to use for the August Grad Recital Festival.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the majority of students who chose to postpone their recitals, they are planning to perform over three days this coming August 12-14 at the Grad Recital Festival.&nbsp;These recitals will be widely accessible as a live broadcast on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC5q5Ffd_6XawKFQTRo8gAxA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s next for Cowal? She intends to wrap up her final undergraduate credits in the Fall of 2021 before applying for her Master&#8217;s in Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to further developing my own voice as both a performer and composer.
