Update from the Office of the VP (Finance and Administration)

In early August, President Benoit Antoine Bacon announced that after five years of service at Carleton, Vice-President (Finance and Administration) Michel Piché has accepted a position at Laurentian University.

The search for a new Vice-President (Finance and Administration) is now underway. Until a successor is named, President Bacon announced that Cindy Taylor, Assistant Vice-President (Human Resources), will serve as Interim Vice-President (Finance and Administration), and Tim Sullivan, Assistant Vice-President (Financial Services), will serve as Interim Chief Financial Officer.

As part of the search process, the university is asking for members of the campus community to provide their input by Complete the short questionnaire by Sept. 1, 2021. All responses will be held in strict confidence by the consultant and the inclusion of your name is optional. More information can be found on Carleton’s VPFA Search website.

Louise Gardiner is retiring!

The Human Resources team would like to inform the Carleton community that our colleague and friend Louise Gardner is retiring after a 15 year career at the university on Sept. 30, 2021. Her last day working however, will be Sept. 10.

Louise  has been an integral part of the Human Resources team for many years.

She started at Carleton in May 2006 in the Human Resources Department and we have been fortunate enough to have her with us ever since.

From 2006 to 2009 Louise held a variety of positions including HR Receptionist, Payroll Clerk, and Organizational Development Assistant. From 2009 to 2019 Louise was the Departmental Administrator of Human Resources and, most recently, in 2019 she became a Talent Acquisition Co-ordinator. In the role of Talent Acquisition Co-ordinator her quiet yet strong leadership has been integral in helping shape the service we provide and in supporting the review of talent services.

Her wonderful kindness and professionalism will be greatly missed by all who have had the chance to work with her over the years, but especially by the HR team. Please join us in wishing her all the best.

Campus Services Moves from F&A to Students and Enrolment

We are pleased to share with you the news that the Campus Services team, led by Kevin Mann, will be joining the Students and Enrolment division effective Sept. 1.

This move better aligns Campus Services – which includes the Bookstore, Dining Services, the Print Shop, Mail Services and the Science Technology Centre (STC) – with the students that they serve on a daily basis. The Students and Enrolment division is dedicated to creating an excellent student experience and we are excited that the Campus Services team will play a role in strengthening that mission.

Please join us in congratulating Kevin and his team.

Cindy Taylor, Interim Vice-President (Finance and Administration)

Suzanne Blanchard, Vice-President (Students and Enrolment)

Important Information about Carleton’s Vaccination Protocols as of Aug. 31, 2021
As previously communicated and based on the strong recommendation of public health authorities, Carleton University, along with other post-secondary institutions in Ontario, will be requiring mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 for all individuals (students, staff, faculty, contractors, and visitors) involved in any in-person Carleton activities both on- and off-campus.

As a result, all individuals who are coming on to campus and/or participating in an in-person Carleton activity, must attest to their vaccination status and having received their first dose by Sept. 8, 2021, and their second dose by no later than Oct.15, 2021. To attest to being vaccinated:

  • Log into cuScreen
  • Click on “Report your latest vaccination status”
  • Carefully read each question and answer appropriately
  • Upload proof of vaccination (vaccine dose administration receipts or equivalent documents), preferably in PDF format

If you have only received one dose of a two dose vaccine series, you can complete your vaccination attestation form with one dose now and update your form 14 days after you received your second dose.

To assist with planning purposes, we encourage all members of the Carleton University community to complete the vaccination attestation form and submit their documents as soon as possible even if you are not planning to participate in in-person activities at this time.

Vaccination Documents

For the purposes of meeting the university’s vaccination requirements, Carleton recognizes all vaccines approved by Health Canada and those listed for emergency use by World Health Organization (WHO).

Vaccination dose administration receipts are available from most government websites. Individuals who received their vaccine in Ontario can download their proof of vaccination through Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccination website. Individuals who received their vaccine in Quebec can download their proof of vaccine through the Government of Quebec’s website.

International students must upload a copy of both the original language proof of vaccination documentation and an officially translated copy.

Any false information or misrepresentation on the mandatory attestation form is a violation of university policy that will be taken very seriously.

Exemption Requests

Any individual who cannot be vaccinated on medical grounds or other protected grounds recognized by the Ontario Human Rights Code can request an exemption. Unvaccinated individuals without an approved permitted exemption will not be able to attend campus or any university activity in-person.

Rapid Testing

Rapid testing is limited to members of the Carleton community who are unvaccinated due to permitted exemptions or who are awaiting their second dose. These individuals are required to adhere to additional health and safety measures, including frequent rapid testing starting Sept. 8, 2021. Individuals awaiting their second dose must receive that dose by no later than Oct. 15, 2021 and are required to adhere to the rapid testing protocol in the interim period. Carleton community members with approved permitted exemptions and those awaiting their second dose will be able to book a mandatory rapid testing appointment through cuScreen. Rapid testing will be required within 72 hours before participating in an in-person activity at Carleton.

More details on rapid testing will be communicated at a later date.

Vaccination Clinics

Health and Counselling Services is offering vaccination clinics on campus with Pfizer vaccines on until Oct. 7, 2021. Moderna vaccines are available upon request. Drop-in vaccinations are also available at any community clinic, pop-up clinic, or neighbourhood vaccination hub in Ottawa

EHS, Emergency Management & Continuity of Operations, and Risk and Insurance form New Department

The new Office of Risk Management came into effect July 1 and reflects the crucial integrated role that the three offices have played and will continue to play in supporting and advising Carleton throughout the pandemic and beyond to ensure the safety of our campus community. It also better reflects how the work of these three offices align and will enhance the long-term strategic planning for risks that are pan-university in scope.

Tony Lackey, who has been at Carleton for over 20 years, has accepted to lead this transition as the department’s Executive Director until May 2022. Tony’s extensive experience and familiarity with the EHS and Emergency Management & Continuity of Operations teams will be an asset in implementing this exciting change at the university. The new department is part of the Finance and Administration division and reports to the Vice-President (Finance and Administration).

Upgraded Recycle Facilities and Waste Collection

Carleton’s Sustainability Office is pleased to announce upgraded recycling facilities, in support of our goal of reaching a zero waste campus.

More than 200 new bins, which allow for composting, paper and mixed recycling and landfill disposal, have been installed across the campus. To support waste diversion, custodial staff will no longer empty individual office bins.

This initiative supports the university’s Strategic Integrated Plan commitment to sustainable practices under the “Strive for Sustainability” strategic direction, as well as Carleton’s detailed Sustainability Plan.

For more information on our waste and recycling practices contact sustainability@carleton.ca or visit our website.
