{"id":531,"date":"2011-08-17T10:42:32","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T14:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/first-year-seminars\/?page_id=531"},"modified":"2015-05-27T09:24:42","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T13:24:42","slug":"fysm-1502","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/first-year-seminars\/fysm-1502\/","title":{"rendered":"FYSM 1502"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>FYSM 1502 &#8211; Selected Topics in Legal Studies<\/h3>\n<p>Offered by Law.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Only counts as an elective.<\/p>\n<p>Topic for 2015-2016: \u00a0Deviance and the Law &#8211; Transdisciplinary Perspectives<\/p>\n<p>Misfit.\u00a0 Rebel.\u00a0 Deviant.\u00a0 Black Sheep.\u00a0 Criminal.\u00a0 Eccentric.\u00a0 Pervert.\u00a0 Pioneer.\u00a0 Pariah.\u00a0 Free Spirit.\u00a0 Freak.\u00a0 Hero.\u00a0 Sicko.\u00a0 Weirdo\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><em>Who decides how non-conformity will be defined, policed, pathologized or celebrated?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this seminar, we delve into this question investigating how deviance has been constructed, contested and controlled from a transdisciplinary perspective.\u00a0 We will consider various approaches to deviance, from essentialist perspectives to post-structuralist critiques.\u00a0 We will further study how the etiology of deviance has been explained, from demonic possession to bad childhoods, and from inherent sickness to subjective labeling.\u00a0 Drawing on multiple traditions and texts including sociology, psychology, critical legal theory, literature, pop culture and jurisprudence, the focus will be on which institutions and experts have the power to define deviant categories and what ideological purposes are advanced.\u00a0 Particular attention will be paid to the ways certain kinds of \u201cdifferences\u201d (class, disability, age, race, gender and sexuality to name a few) are embedded in deviant categories.\u00a0 Throughout the course, students will have a chance to self-reflect on the ways they engage with, resist and are implicated by notions of non\/conformity.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Prerequisite(s): normally restricted to students entering the first year of a B.A., B.Cog.Sc. or the B.G.In.S. program.<br \/>\nSeminar three hours a week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FYSM 1502 &#8211; Selected Topics in Legal Studies Offered by Law.\u00a0\u00a0Only counts as an elective.
