\n Prof. Irving’s Chapter ‘Slipping Into the Shadows: Boxing, Affect, and Healing Justice’ Published in ‘Trans Athletes\u2019 Resistance’ Book Released in November\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

We are delighted to announce the publication of Prof. Dan Irving<\/a>‘s chapter ‘Slipping Into the Shadows: Boxing, Affect, and Healing Justice<\/a>‘ published in ‘Trans Athletes\u2019 Resistance’ book released in November of 2023. This chapter offers an autotheoretical account of Irving’s experiences as a trans man training for his first amateur bout \u2013 one that has yet to come but borne out of a never-ending fight. His chapter is in conversation with autobiography (McBee, 2018), journalistic (Oates, 2006) and ethnographical scholarship addressing the intricacies of pugilistic violence as a response to systemic gender, racial, sexual and economic oppression (Beauchez, 2017; Rutter, 2007).<\/p>\n\n\n

“Boxing draws fighters from marginalized communities. As a trans man, I have fought intense \u2018negative\u2019 feelings most of my life \u2013 emotions culminating into rage. I joined an amateur boxing club in Ottawa after trying to instigate a street altercation with a stranger. Feeling out of control, I sought refuge with others who also believe fighting solves problems.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Professor Dan Irving is a faculty member in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation at Carleton University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
