A typical day at work looks like…
At the CFIA my main duties were to deal with consumer complaints regarding prepackaged food, recalls, and recall outbreaks. This would mean investigating consumer complaints by speaking to the consumer, taking samples and performing a trace back of the food which could include investigating the retailer, manufacturer, processor, grower, etc. I have also performed investigations on foods that have gone on to be recalled, and investigated foods in potential or current outbreaks.
My future goals are…
I am currently on Education Leave from the CFIA to complete my Master’s degree in toxicology. I hope that I will be able to switch my career into risk assessment of chemicals. I am particularly interested in food toxicology, but would also be interested in risk assessment in food microbiology or environmental toxicology.
My degree has helped me get to where I am today by…
Carleton’s Food Science program gave me a good understanding of food science which I frequently applied during my work int he CFIA. It has allowed me to excel in my career as a food inspector. Combined with my MSc, it has given me a unique understanding of food toxicology and human health risk assessment.
My advice for current students is…
When I was graduating I felt a lot of pressure to find a good career/job. Since entering the work force I’ve realized that people are always switching jobs and that it is impractical to think that someone would stay in one specific job for their entire career. There are many years ahead to find a good career path and starting in the wrong direction only gives valuable experience for later on.
