A typical day at work looks like…
I coordinate career development programs for Indigenous employees and students of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch at Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada as well as Indigenous employees in government departments within the health portfolio. This includes Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The training opportunities of these programs incorporate an Indigenous cultural perspective.
My future goals are…
Academically my passion has been science, in particular food science and biology, but I also have a personal passion for Indigenous culture. As a Metis-Cree woman, I would love to create a program that supports and creates opportunities for Indigenous youth to succeed in fields such as science and health!
My degree has helped me get to where I am today by…
Although I am not working in the Food Science field, my degree has given me the credibility to get to where I am now. My degree has provided me with so much knowledge, not just the scientific knowledge but also many useful transferable skills that I use daily in my current position.
My advice for current students is…
Take any opportunity you’re given, you never know where it may lead you! Try everything once, you may discover something new! Attend career fairs and network, start practicing it now because networking will continue to be useful in your career!
