\"Tim-Caulfield\"Lately, Timothy Caulfield has been making a name for himself as the academic who challenged Gwyneth Paltrow in his book, Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash.<\/em><\/p>\n

But as an expert in health law and policy at the University of Alberta, Caulfield\u2019s investigations of pseudoscience extend much further than celebrity diets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re at a very interesting time in history because all of this great science is being produced, but it\u2019s never been so twisted with so much baloney being shared,\u201d said Caulfield in a phone interview. \u201cIt\u2019s a fascinating tension between the two realities and that\u2019s playing out in the context of vaccinations.\u201d<\/p>\n

On May 13, Timothy Caulfield will give a keynote address entitled \u201cCelebrities, Pseudoscience and Social Media: What\u2019s Driving Vaccine Hesitancy?\u201d as part of the FPA Professional Institute, \u201cVaccine Hesitancy: Combating a \u2018Wicked\u2019 Risk Communication Problem\u201d at Carleton University.<\/p>\n

\u201cVaccine hesitancy is an extremely complicated problem because these people are not scientifically illiterate; they feel they\u2019ve educated themselves on the issue,\u201d said Caulfield. \u201cThey are driven, in part, by a lack of trust in traditional sources of health information and in the pharmaceutical industry. They believe the research is compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caulfield adds that the problem has been exacerbated by social media: \u201cTwitter, Facebook, and blogs are all disseminating and magnifying this pseudoscience. It creates communities that support these beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The professional institute is bringing in experts from across North America to discuss the profile of people who are vaccine hesitant, as well as strategies to improve communication with them. Caulfield argues health authorities have to keep the conversation going.<\/p>\n

\u201cProviding scientific information alone doesn\u2019t change people\u2019s minds. But I think we have to keep hammering away at the facts,\u201d said Caulfield. \u201cWe can\u2019t shy away from engaging and if we don\u2019t engage loudly, we won\u2019t be heard\u2014because the internet\u2019s not going away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timothy Caulfield is a Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy at the University of Alberta. He\u2019ll be giving the keynote address at the FPA Professional Institute, \u201cVaccine Hesitancy: Combating a \u2018Wicked\u2019 Risk Communication Problem\u201d on May 13.<\/p>\n
