Tori McNeely is a second-year communication studies student in the School of Journalism and Communication. She attended the event entitled, “Canada’s Economic Outlook: Weathering the End of the Supercycle,” which is part of FPA Research Month.

On the evening of Wednesday March 9th, Carleton University’s Faculty of Public Affairs Research Month hosted another major event. The event was sponsored by the Carleton Undergraduate Economic Society, Carleton Graduate Economics Society, and the Faculty of Public Affairs. Carleton welcomed Deputy Chief Economist for the Conference Board of Canada, Pedro Antunes. Having been a member of the Conference Board of Canada since 1991, Antunes is now responsible for managing his team of economists in producing economic forecasts and reports. The commodity supercycle that Pedro Antunes discussed in his lecture refers to the rise and fall of many physical commodity prices – one commodity in particular being the price of oil. Antunes’ main focus during the lecture was to take a closer look at what is driving the strength of the U.S. economy and the impact this seems to be having on the Canadian economy. Discussing Canada’s labour markets and opportunities for youth employment, Pedro Antunes provided a very insightful lecture into the Canadian economy.
