Member of Parliament Elizabeth May, the Green Party of Canada’s long-time leader and a lifelong environmental advocate, will deliver the Faculty of Public Affairs’ Bell Lecture at 7 p.m. on May 8 at the Carleton Dominion Chalmers Centre. The event will also be available by Zoom webinar.
Titled “The time for action is now: a time capsule from 1999,” May’s talk will delve into the history of climate action and ask, “Could we have avoided the level of climate change emergency we are now experiencing?”
“It’s an honour to welcome Elizabeth May to deliver the 2023 Dick, Ruth and Judy Bell Lecture,” said Brenda O’Neill, Dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs. “This annual lecture honours the contributions of individuals to the political and public life of Canada. In this spirit, Elizabeth May is an ideal speaker for this special event.”
Elizabeth May served as Leader of the Green Party of Canada from 2006 to 2019. She is the Green Party of Canada’s first elected Member of Parliament representing Saanich-Gulf Islands in 2011. She continues as the Member of Parliament and serves as the Parliamentary Leader of the Green caucus.
May knew Ruth Bell, who established the Dick, Ruth and Judy Bell Lecture and the Bell Chair in Canadian Parliamentary Democracy in the Department of Political Science. Speakers may include individuals who have been active in politics or public service or distinguished scholars in political science. The lectures themselves are generally devoted to discussions of political subjects, either in a present-day or historical context. Scholars and graduate students are encouraged to attend and use the lectures as a basis for further work in Canadian studies.
