With a thriving live music scene, fantastic microbreweries, and popular clubs, Ottawa is not only known for Saturday nights in the Byward Market and Elgin Street, but also for the ability to “play” outdoors–whether biking, skating on the Rideau Canal, cross-country skiing or nearby downhill skiing.
At the same time, this city is incredibly compact. Many students are within walking distance–and definitely biking distance–of the Carleton campus, downtown, or both.
That’s a lot of fun packed into a relatively small space.
Nightlife:
Bars and clubs in the Byward Market and Elgin Street are the main destination for partygoers, along with clubs across the river in Gatineau, Quebec.
Great restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs can also be found in the Glebe (Bank Street), Hintonburg, and Westboro neighbourhoods.
Somerset Street is populated with Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese restaurants while Preston Street is home to Ottawa’s Little Italy.

Sports:
Carleton students receive discount tickets to see the Ottawa Senators NHL hockey team. Ottawa also has a CFL team, the Redblacks, as well as a semi-professional soccer team, the Ottawa Fury.
National Museums:

Shopping:
Ottawa has several malls, including the Rideau Centre (OC Transpo Route 7), Bayshore, St. Laurent, The Trainyards, and several outlet malls.
Unique shops and restaurants also attract residents to the Byward Market, Bank Street in the Glebe neighbourhood, Wellington Street in Hintonburg, Richmond Road in Westboro, and downtown Elgin Street.
Getting Around:
A first-class bus and light-rail transit system connects Carleton to all the amenities.
The campus is served by three OC Transpo routes and the high-speed O-Train.
It’s also surrounded by walking paths and bicycle trails on the Rideau River and Rideau Canal that connect to Ottawa’s dense network of trails.
In the winter, the canal serves as a skating thoroughfare, as students can skate between the campus and downtown.
