These data are organized by sector of employment, not by position titles. So, for example, an accountant working for an automobile manufacturer will be included in the Resources, Manufacturing and Trades sector.
Sector 1: Education
This sector includes all jobs within the education sector such as teachers, teaching assistants, librarians and personal support workers. Carleton University graduates in this sector would include the many professors that went on to study at world-renowned universities such as Yale University and New York University.
Sector 2: Finance, Insurance, Property Industries
This sector is involved in institutions of rental and leasing of various goods, as well as selling and leasing of real estate. It also includes banking and investment industries as well as insurance industries. Carleton University graduates have held positions such as communications advisor to the World Bank and as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada.
Sector 3: Government
This sector is comprised of all public service positions in all tiers of government: federal, provincial, territorial, municipal, Indigenous and international. Some examples of Carleton University graduates in this sector are those working as ambassadors to a number of countries and directors in agencies of the United Nations.
Sector 4: Health Care, Social Support
This sector includes all jobs in health care, such as nurses, doctors and support staff, as well as in social programs working with children and youth. It also includes cultural and political advocacy groups. There are several Carleton University graduates working within the health care system as doctors, and even with the United Nations on projects such as the World Food Program.
Sector 5: Media, Communication and IT Industries
This sector includes broadcast, print, television, online media and films, as well as the information technology sector. It also includes information industries like archives and libraries. Many Carleton University graduates have gone on to be anchors and reporters in well-known companies like the CBC, and include the editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest.
Sector 6: Other Service Industries
This includes jobs in the retail industry, the performing arts, airlines, spectator sports and most consulting agencies. It also includes jobs within: recreational facilities; food and drink establishments; and the travel industry. Jobs such as President of Farm Boy and Senior President of Mary Kay Cosmetics Canada, both formerly held by Carleton University graduates, would fit into this category.
Sector 7: Resources, Manufacturing and Trades
This sector is comprised of jobs in the resource industry, such as oil extraction, agriculture and mining, manufacturing industries, trades industries, such as automotive and construction, as well as administration industries. This sector contains many Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) such as the CEO and President of CHRISCO Canada.
Sector 8: The Professions
This sector includes the professions of engineering, architecture, law, politics and accounting as well as advertising and public relations industries. It also includes scientific and technical services such as computer systems design. A large number of Carleton University graduates in this sector are lawyers, many of whom are partners, or own their own firm.
