Author Meets Readers invites Carleton students and the community to join an informal discussion on new books published by members of the Carleton University Faculty of Public Affairs.
About the Book: List Cultures examines lists as a cultural form. Whether it’s the Billboard Hot-100 chart or an online “listicle”, this seemingly-trivial device is linked to wider political issues around knowledge, surveillance and statecraft. This book explores a long comparative history to show how lists make culture—from writing’s origins in Mesopotamia to 15th century double-entry bookkeeping and modern literature.
About the Author: Liam Cole Young is an Instructor in the School of Journalism and Communication, where he teaches and writes about media and cultural materialism. He is interested in the infrastructure of civilization — the way that human societies communicate, cooperate, and hold together across time and space.
