Bagels and Banter is a monthly opportunity to discuss shared research and teaching and learning topics with faculty members in a relaxed setting. Learn about new topics, teaching methods and potential research collaborations.

Bagels and Banter is open to all faculty and staff members and FPA graduate students.

March’s topic “We Built It. They Came. Now What?” is presented by Melissa Redmond from the School of Social Work.

For faculty members, academic success continues to require that scholars manage busy teaching and service schedules, while also setting aside substantive periods to advance their research and produce high quality and well-placed publications (Kempenaar and Murray 2019). The cataclysmic work disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic did little to attenuate the flow of research findings detailing the isolating effects of contemporary academe’s heavier workloads, longer work hours, and workplace stress (Dickson-Swift, et al. 2009). Endeavouring to dispel academic isolation, “make writing social” and meet peer needs for writing support and nurturing academic community, volunteers have led several faculty writing initiatives over the last decade (Belcher, 2019).This Bagel and Banter session invites members of the Carleton community to consider the history of faculty writing support initiatives at Carleton, while critically engaging the feasibility and sustainability of similar ad hoc volunteer-led programming.

Please Note: This event is being held as a hybrid event over Zoom and in-person in Loeb D382. If you require any accommodations, please contact fpa-events@carleton.ca.
