Join Brenda Morris, Sarah Todd, Kenta Asakura and Brooke Eagle from the School of Social Work to banter about the complexity of this topic. In Ontario, university disability offices reported a 67% increase in the number of students citing mental health challenges when registering for disability services between 2006-2011(Condra et al., 2015). Responding to individualized student mental health challenges requires highly flexible and situated policy processes that balance educational standards, institutional policies, the mandates of relevant professional bodies, and legislative frameworks, including human rights, that shape these situations. In their work to address these complexities they pose a number of reflective questions that guide a process for responding that balances the rights, needs and interests of students with mental health issues with the professional and institutional demands that students meet core requirements of their education.
