November’s topic “Encouraging Interpersonal Friendship: Could it be Government Policy? ” is presented by Andrea Chandler (Political Science).

Event Description:

Research from diverse disciplines has established that warm personal friendships are beneficial to the individual, and have positive ripple effects for society and the economy. At the same time, loneliness has become increasingly recognized as a problem that creates negative impacts for mental health. While some people might insist that friendship is an exclusively private matter, feminist and LGBTQ scholars have long established that states are deeply implicated in the regulation of interpersonal relationships, specifically through marriage laws. Could promoting friendship be government policy, and what kinds of policies have been shown to produce results? To begin to answer this question, one can propose particular approaches to stimulating social connections, but it may also be essential to explore factors in contemporary society (such as neoliberalism) that may inhibit or undermine friendship. The research is co-funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Employment and Social Development Canada. Knowledge Synthesis Grant (The Emerging Asocial Society), awarded April 2022, Grant number 872-2021-0008.
