For more than 20 years, we have offered one of the best Master of Journalism (MJ) programs in the country. In our program, you will work with talented faculty whose professional reputations are unmatched in the country. The School of Journalism and Communication provides two points of entry into the MJ program – Year One or Year Two.

A Collaborative Specialization in African Studies is available.

Year One Entry

Most applicants will be admitted to Year One of the two-year program. The first year provides intensive foundational training in print, broadcast and online journalism, alongside courses on journalism law, journalism theory, professional practices and reporting methods. In the second year, students combine media- and/or subject-specific workshop courses with electives and specialized seminars designed to complement their capstone Master’s Research Project.

Year Two Entry

The second point of entry is for students with prior journalistic experience or credentials who will be admitted directly into Year Two. They will normally pursue the Journalism Studies completion option, or a path of coursework selected in consultation with the Supervisor of Graduate Studies, which will include a thesis or master’s research project, as appropriate.

Applicants for the Master of Journalism program are strongly urged to start the process well before the February 1 deadline. Applications received after February 1 will only be reviewed if space remains and funding after the deadline is not guaranteed.

Capital Advantage

Studying in the nation’s capital—the centre of political and public policy journalism as well as Canada’s leading high-tech community—provides you with a living laboratory in which to hone your reporting skills in international relations, business, government, politics, social affairs, arts & culture, information technology and science & research. The School also has a member of our faculty who assists students in finding employment, and a number of media organizations visit campus each year to interview students for summer or permanent positions.
