Although he just recently joined the Bachelor of Global and International Studies (BGInS) program full-time, Sean Burges grew up in Ottawa and is no stranger to Carleton University. An expert in South American politics, Brazil and South-South relations, Burges spent two years with the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs as a SSHRC post-doctoral fellow after completing his PhD at the University of Warwick. In 2016-2017, he returned to Carleton as a visiting scholar in the Department of Political Science.
Burges says, “In 2018, my wife was offered a superb opportunity in Ottawa. At the time I was running Carleton’s non-BGInS international internship program. After wandering the world for a quarter century, we decided the time was right to come home.”
Burges previously held appointments in Government of Canada departments, including as the Cadieux-Leger Fellow at Global Affairs Canada and a senior policy analyst at the Canadian International Development Agency. While at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Burges won a major early career grant from the Australian Research Council (ARC).
He says, “The ARC grant I received allowed me to travel to eight countries on three continents for research, offering me access to officials in business, government and international organizations. I am able to bring a deep understanding of global affairs and public and private policy processes to the classroom.”
Burges says he is deeply honoured to join the BGInS team: “Carleton has developed a superb, internationally-oriented, cross-disciplinary program that develops the skills and aptitudes at the undergraduate level that students need to become global citizens. The mix of geographic, disciplinary and practical expertise in BGInS is astonishing.”

This year, Burges is teaching undergraduate courses in ethics and globalization, global and international economic issues, international law and politics, as well as overseeing six-week international placements (virtual this year).
Burges is also a sports and wildlife photographer, running Mundo Sport Images with a colleague.
