Alexandra Bugailiskis speaks to NPSIA faculty and students.
Alexandra Bugailiskis, an Associate Deputy Minister for Europe, the Middle East and the Maghreb, Global Affairs Canada, offered a wide-ranging assessment of world affairs at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) Student Association Conference, “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: 50 Years of International Affairs at Carleton University.”
“If I had to describe the period we are in right now, I would say ‘uncertain,'” said Ms. Bugailiskis, who has served as Canadian ambassador to Syria, Cuba, and Poland. She was also closely involved with Canadian government activities in Namibia, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
She said much of her current focus is on the events in the Middle East, as well as the exodus of refugees from that region. She also praised Canadians for opening their hearts and homes to so many refugees and the Canadian government for taking a three-pronged approach to global issues.
“Canada is displaying great agility on the world stage right now because the development, diplomacy and military units are all working together,” she said.
Ms. Bugailiskis praised NPSIA, from which she earned an MA in International Affairs in 1992, after earning a BA in Political Science in 1979. She has been named one of the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs’ 75 for the 75th, which is honouring 75 prominent alumni in honour of Carleton University’s 75th anniversary. She will be featured in the March edition of the 75 for the 75th on the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs website.
