Victoria McArthur, director of the Bachelor of Media Production and Design program in the School of Journalism and Communication, has received funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) to establish MARVEL – The Mixed and Augmented Reality and Virtual Environments Lab. She is one of 13 Carleton researchers  awarded a combined total of $1.24M for their groundbreaking projects.

The lab will “study issues of access to multi-user applications of virtual, mixed, and augmented reality technologies, collectively extended reality (XR). By developing improved low-fi (e.g., smartphone-based) XR platforms, this project seeks to reduce cost and expertise as barriers to access the XR technologies, which have the potential for transformative disruption to the tech industry,” says McArthur.

“Enabled by the requested infrastructure, the research team will develop XR software to support user-generated stories for collaborative XR, and investigate methods to improve social inclusion through improved avatar design tools. We will design and assess XR software through comparative experimental research with both low- and high-fidelity XR devices and to study methods to reduce cybersickness. Supported by several high-fidelity XR head-mounted displays (HMD) and tracking systems, we will be able to compare our novel techniques to state-of-the-art high-fidelity options. The HMDs and tracking system will be further used to help capture and present stories produced in co-creation workshops with diverse research participants. Our overall goal is to make collaborative XR available to and inclusive of a wider range of people. HQP trained in MARVEL will leave with cutting-edge skills in XR system design, implementation, and evaluation to support industrial needs in this rapidly growing field.”
