The Institute of African Studies has launched a collaborative PhD with Specialization in African Studies across three units: Anthropology, Sociology and International Affairs. The inaugural cohort of the PhD program will be welcomed in the 2023/24 academic year.
“This a unique opportunity for students registered in the PhD International Affairs to claim a specialization in African studies,” said Teddy Y. Samy, director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA). “We hope it will also encourage more students with research interests in Africa to consider this new collaborative program.”
This program is a first of its kind at a graduate level in Canada. It builds on the success and mandate of the Institute’s research vision and sustained interest in graduate studies in the field of African Studies. The specialization designed for graduates of master’s programs in the humanities and the social sciences who, through interdisciplinary research, wish to enrich and deepen their training in a particular discipline or area of study by developing expertise in African Studies.
Institute Director Nduka Otiono said, “More units will be added to the collaborative PhD in African Studies in the coming months. Amongst the units expected to join the Collaborative PhD in African Studies specialization are English Language and Literature, Architecture, Political Science, History, and Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture.”
