Who is the Political Party?
In this talk, Dr. Cross contends that political parties are complex organizations comprised of several different strata. Each of these has different areas of party responsibility and decision-making authority. Beyond identifying the basic power-sharing covenant among the different layers, Cross discusses who populates each of these levels with an emphasis on socio-demographic representation.
Moderator: Dr. Brenda O’Neill was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs on Oct. 1, 2020. She also holds a position as Professor in the Department of Political Science. Her research addresses several topics including political behaviour and gender and politics, focused largely on Canada. Her most recent research has examined gender and party leadership and the role of feminist identification in shaping support for sovereignty among women in Quebec. She has held several SSHRC grants and recently held the Thelma Margaret Horte Fellowship in Women and Society at the University of Calgary. Between 2017 to 2020, she served as English-language editor of the Canadian Journal of Political Science.
Presenter: William Cross is a student of Canadian and comparative political institutions and his work emphasizes the connections between civil society and political parties and legislatures. His recent work focusses on questions relating to intra-party democracy and organization. This includes studies of party leadership selection, candidate recruitment and selection, party membership, election campaigning and power relations between local and national party organizations across the Anglo parliamentary democracies. Dr. Cross’ writing has appeared in many leading political science journals and his recent books include: The Personalization of Democratic Politics and the Challenge for Political Parties (Rowman Littlefield Press, 2018), The Promise and Challenge of Party Primary Elections (McGill-Queens, 2016), The Politics of Party Leadership (Oxford University Press, 2015), The Challenges of Intra-Party Democracy (Oxford University Press 2013) and Politics at the Centre: The Selection and Removal of Party Leaders in the Anglo Parliamentary Democracies (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012). The latter of which received the 2013 Donald Smiley Prize from the Canadian Political Science Association. In 2015-16, Dr. Cross served as President of the Canadian Political Science Association.
Discussant: Jonathan Malloy is the Honourable Dick and Ruth Bell Chair in Canadian Parliamentary Democracy and Professor in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University. He previously served as department chair from 2012-2018. His principal areas of research include Ontario politics, parliamentary committees and prime ministerial leadership, and he served as president of the Canadian Study of Parliament Group from 2009-2013. He has also co-authored and co-edited two books on Ontario politics – The Politics of Ontario, the first text on Ontario government and politics in two decades, and Fighting for Votes, the first ever book-length study of a provincial election in Canada.
