Faced with the combined challenges of an aging population, increasing health care costs and stagnating health funding, appropriate use of medication and access to medication are more than ever central issues for the health of Canadians.

No single discipline – be it medicine, pharmacy, epidemiology, health administration or public policy – can tackle these problems singlehandedly. To address these gaps, there is a need for collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches to these challenges.

The purpose of the Rational Therapeutics and Medication Policy Group is to bring together Ottawa academic researchers whose work focuses on the rational use of medication and on access to medication. This event will provide an introduction to the members of the RTMP, and highlight research being done in Ottawa to address how we can achieve a more rational use of medicines in Canada.

Special guest lecturer Dr. Joel Lexchin from the School of Health Policy and Management at York University: “How Safe Are We? Health Canada and Drug Safety”. This talk will cover limitations of clinical trials, premarket safety evaluation, Adverse Drug Reaction reporting, postmarket pharmacosurveillance, and an evaluation of how well Health Canada communicates safety issues.
