CUROP FAQ
As part of the Carleton University Research Opportunity Program (CUROP), the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs is hosting summer undergraduate research internships. Under the supervision of a faculty member, each student participant will design their research project and complete it over the summer.

No. Students must have second-year standing in this current semester in order to apply for CUROP in the summer.

Yes, students who will be graduating in June 2025 are eligible to apply.

Yes. However, all CUROP students must have legal authorization to work in Canada for the duration of their CUROP commitment. International students should check with the ISSO to confirm their work eligibility.

Yes, students need to have a 9.0 or higher GPA to be eligible.

No, students who have had a CUROP previously are not eligible to apply.

Yes, but you need to apply through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

No, graduate students are not eligible for CUROP. It is only for undergraduate students.

No, the award requires that you will work on your project on a full-time or near full-time basis from May 1, 2025 to August 31, 2025.

While participating students do not necessarily need to be on campus, all CUROP work must be done within the province of Ontario. Students must also make arrangements to be in regular contact with their supervisor.

Your description should clearly identify a project, briefly sketch out a methodology (how you will do it), and what is the expected output. You should also outline what skills you anticipate developing and what you expect to learn by doing this project.

The outputs can vary from project to project. Some examples of outputs include a research essay; a policy report detailing findings and recommendations; and an empirical research portion of an Honours Research Essay.

All CUROP students will have to submit a two-page summary report and a 300 word abstract of the research project and its results by the end of the summer. On the recommendation of their supervisor, students who complete this research will be invited to participate in an FPGA CUROP showcase event in the Fall.

You may wish to approach your current or past professors if they have expertise in your research field. Your professors may also be useful in identifying other suitable supervisors. The Chair/Director of your unit and/or the graduate administrator may also be helpful.

Faculty members are the best to determine this when you ask. In general, they need to indicate a willingness and availability to supervise your work over the summer.

No, the CUROP is a project initiated by undergraduate students and funded through ODFPA. It is not designed to supplement a faculty member’s research plan.

Any full-time faculty member may act as a supervisor. This includes tenure-track and tenured professors and teaching stream professors at any rank (lecturer, assistant, associate and full). On the other hand, contract instructors are not eligible.

No. FPGA undergraduate students may work with supervisors in other faculties.
