WANT TO DO MORE INFORMATIVE RESEARCH ON THE CAUSES OF SEXUAL OFFENDING? ATTEND OUR SEMINAR IN MONTREAL! FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES (APPLICATION DEADLINE: AUGUST 28).

With support from a SSHRC Connection Grant (Nunes & Hermann), the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA), and the Carleton University Psychology Department, we will be presenting a pre-conference seminar at the ATSA conference in Montreal this October. The ultimate goal of our seminar is to facilitate more rigorous and relevant research on the causes of sexual offending by taking stock of the state of the available evidence and providing guidance for future research. Tony Ward and Anthony Beech will speak about their Integrated Theory of Sexual Offending, Michael Seto will speak about his Motivation-Facilitation Model, and Patrick Lussier will speak about his Criminal Career Perspective. Funding is available to students and recent graduates to help offset the costs of attending our seminar. More information is provided below.

TITLE: Connecting Theory With Research: How to Test Theoretical Assertions About the Causes of Sexual Offending

SPEAKERS: Kevin L. Nunes, Chantal A. Hermann, Michael C. Seto, Tony Ward, Anthony R. Beech, and Patrick Lussier

ABSTRACT: Theoretical models of the causes of sexual offending are important for organizing and guiding research, but there is often uncertainty about the evidence available and the research required to test the assertions in these models. In this seminar, we will (1) summarize three important models; (2) identify the main assertions that have been supported by evidence, contradicted by evidence, or are in need of (more) research; and (3) present strategies for conducting more conclusive tests of the most important aspects of each model. Attendees will have an opportunity to develop or refine their own research ideas in consultation with the presenters.
