Dean is a human geographer with over 25 years’ experience researching processes of demographic and economic change in sparsely populated and ‘remote’ areas in Australia and across the Arctic north. Dean has edited six research books and published nearly 200 academic papers. His key interests are in who lives in, works in, and visits sparsely populated areas, and how and why this changes over time. Dean conducts primarily quantitative research, using large data sets to reveal patterns in human geography at small area level. Dean is one of the developers of the Beyond Periphery theory of social and demographic change in sparsely populated areas, and is currently working on projects in Sweden, Canada, Australia, Scotland, Iceland and Norway.
