The Working Group on the Future of Teaching and Learning seeks to develop a set of recommendations on the future of teaching and learning at Carleton in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guided by pedagogy, evidence-based teaching practices, and the needs of Carleton’s teaching and learning community, the working group aims to:

  • Identify current trends, challenges and opportunities that face higher education
  • Identify and assess innovative teaching and learning practices that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath
  • Determine how these trends and innovations will affect teaching and learning in the postsecondary context in the next 5-10 years
  • Consult Carleton’s teaching and learning community
  • Develop recommendations on the future directions as related to teaching and learning and present them to Carleton’s community

Guiding Principles and Core Values

The working group is informed by the following core principles and values:

  • Equity, diversity and inclusion, including accessibility, within and outside of the classroom, where we value diverse life experiences and paths to knowledge co-construction, and recognize the visible and invisible barriers that prevent equal access to safe and fulfilling educational experiences.
  • Partnerships and connectedness, where we value “outside the box” thinking about where (and with whom) meaningful learning experiences happen—in the classroom, volunteerism, local to international communities, the workplace, across disciplines, and so on—and how these collectively prepare students for culturally responsive civic participation and future employment.
  • Innovation and research-informed practices, where we value pedagogical innovation, whether technology-driven or otherwise, and continuous reflective practice and inquiry into teaching as well as data-informed approaches to iteratively improve the learning experience for all our students.

The graphic below depicts our timeline goals. The working group will meet monthly from May to October to engage in discussions about the future of teaching and learning at Carleton. We will also invite speakers knowledgeable about local and global educational trends to host sessions over the summer online via Zoom. These events will be open to the entire Carleton community and will provide additional and alternative perspectives to enrich our conversations. The working group’s final report and recommendations will be shared with the university in October.
